Harold David Lyons Jr.

Harold David Lyons, Jr., 74, formerly of Star, ID, departed this world peacefully on May 24, 2024, at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, FL. Born on May 31, 1949, in Abbeville, LA, David was the cherished son of the late Harold David and Mabel (née Noel) Lyons, Sr. David was a man of many talents and passions, known for his literary prowess and insatiable curiosity about the world. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable aptitude for writing, a gift he would cultivate and refine throughout his life. He attended college at Northeast Louisiana in Monroe, LA majoring in music, which was a huge part of his life, enriching his experiences and connecting him to others. He spent most of his career as a travel writer for Northwest Airlines inflight magazine, a role that allowed him to combine his love for travel with his talent for storytelling. “Night Hawk” was his nom de plume at Memphis Magazine, and he taught creative writing at Memphis State. David enjoyed fly fishing and tying flies as a hobby in his earlier years. David’s culinary skills were renowned among his family and friends; he took immense pleasure in preparing and sharing Cajun-inspired favorites such as gumbo and creole. His strategic mind and expansive vocabulary made him an extraordinary Scrabble player, elevating each game to a cerebral delight. David had a wonderful sense of humor, adding joy and laughter to every gathering. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Edward P. Lyons, and his wife, Donna, of Lafayette, LA, his two sisters, Michelle L. McCarthy and her husband, “Mac”, of Bonita Springs, FL, and Ethel L. Smith and her husband, Chris, of Sugar Tree, TN; and his cherished nieces and nephews to many of whom he was known as “Powee” or just “Uncle David”: Cheryl, Daniel, Allen, Natalie, Brandon, Brent, Madelyn, and Lauren. He also leaves behind his adored great-nieces and nephews: Blaine, Christopher, Garrett Ross, Noel, Allie, Piper, Quinn, Ryan, Maddox, Mollie, Hunter, John, Will, Madison, Hayden, and Berkley, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. David’s enduring legacy of love, creativity, and intellectual curiosity will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Services will be held in Abbeville, LA, where he will be interred at a later date in his beloved hometown.
