Shirley M. Bohmer

Shirley (Hickle) Bohmer, 89, passed away peacefully November 17, 2024, following a lengthy and debilitating illness which she handled with grace and dignity. She was married 60 years to Tom and together they created a loving and devoted family that was forever a source of pride: Jim (Kathryn), Mary (Martin) Herrington, and Mike (Rebecca); grandchildren Matthew and Sam Bohmer, Claire, Sarah and John Herrington and Danny, Vivi and Quinn Bohmer. After graduating from Morehead State University, Shirley taught in Venezuela for several years before settling in Cincinnati where she and Tom met and married. When their kids became older, she returned to the classroom as the first ELS teacher at Sycamore High School. Shirley helped her students overcome the language barrier and, more importantly, made them feel welcome. Because of her unfailing warmth, her circle of friends was large and her home a hub of activity where everyone gathered, laughed and enjoyed her gourmet cooking. Holidays were always special and despite her ongoing concern, the turkey was never dry. Shirley was happy on the golf course, in the garden, traveling the world and cheering on the Fighting Irish, Buckeyes and St. Joe Hawks. She was a top-notch bridge player, accumulating Master points and partnering with Tom in duplicate bridge. As limited mobility made her world smaller, technology gave her access to bridge games across the world and sports arenas near and far. Shirley was predeceased by an infant daughter, Susan, parents Clyde and Violet Hickle, siblings Gene, Peggy, and Mitch. She leaves behind brother-in-law David Bohmer (Bobbie) and sister-in-law Dianne McGoron (Bruce). Tom and the family extend heartfelt thanks to family and friends who have been a source of joy throughout Shirley’s life. Special appreciation goes to Jenefer Jackson who cared for Shirley with selfless love. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Light Catholic Community, 19860 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers, FL 33967.
