Dr. David Callum Carmichael Stark

Dr. D. Callum Stark passed away on March 11, 2015, aged 87, in Naples, Florida. He had been a resident of the Naples area for over 20 years. Dr. Stark was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1927, a son of David Carmichael Stark and Elizabeth Helen Mary Cowan. He attended the High School of Stirling and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He qualified at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1956. He served in the Royal Army of Medical Corps and rose to the rank of Major. In 1954, he married Jean Mary Jenkins of Griffithstown, Wales. Dr. Stark was a Consultant Anesthetist at Newcastle General Hospital in 1965 when he and his family decided to emigrate to the United States. In the United States, Dr. Stark was on the Attending Staff and was Anesthesiologist-in-Chief and Chairman at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, as well as a Professor of Anesthesiology. In 1983, he joined the Attending Staff at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, New York. He was the Chief of Anesthesiology and Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology. He retired in 1991. He was also a member of numerous professional societies and presented many papers internationally over the span of his career. Dr. Stark was the author of Practical Points in Anesthesiology, published in 1974, as well as numerous chapters in other publications. Dr. Stark is survived by his wife, Jean Mary Jenkins Stark of Naples, Florida. In addition, he is survived by three sons and a daughter, and six grandchildren. They are J. Cowan Stark and his fiancee Beth Emmett of Durham, NH, Donald M. Stark and his fiancee Stacy Waters of Chicago, IL, Peter Stark and his wife Deborah of Lewisburg, PA, and Fiona H. M. Manseau of The Villages, Florida. His grandchildren are: John C. Stark of Towson, MD, Christina E. Stark and her husband Robert West of New Haven, CT, Elizabeth A. Stark and her fiance John F. Davis of Wichita, KS, Andrew C. Stark of Danvers, MA, Katlyn Manseau and her fiance Richard Lowe of Tampa, FL, and Michael Manseau of Boca Raton, FL. In addition to his parents, Dr. Stark was predeceased by a brother, Robert Donald Cowan Stark of Scotland in 1940, and a daughter-in-law, Jane Hyland Stark, in 2009. Dr. Stark was an avid golfer throughout his lifetime, and most recently was a member of Spanish Wells Country Club in Bonita Springs. He was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, a member at Saint Andrews Society of Southwest Florida, and the English-Speaking Union of the United States, Naples Branch, where he was a past president. Services will be on Monday, March 16 at 10 o’clock in the morning at First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, Florida. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Stark’s memory to The First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home.
