Gary L. Jones

Gary L. Jones, 73 of Bonita Springs FL, passed away peacefully on May 13 after a long, hard-fought battle against his illness. Gary and his wife of 23 years, Elizabeth Jones, have resided in Bonita Springs for 12 years where they relocated from Indianapolis after retirement. Gary was a Railroader for over 40 years in Indianapolis where he worked for Conrail/CSX in various roles, retiring as a dispatch manager. Gary enjoyed golfing with his buddies and could often be found on the greens at Bonita Fairways, where his wife Liz also sometimes worked. He was a longtime Harley Davidson Owner and loved connecting with other owners and riders. He enjoyed riding with his friends in Florida as well as traveling many miles of scenic routes in Indiana. He participated in many charity rides and poker runs and was thrilled to have achieved his goal of attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally twice. One of his favorite places to visit, with or without his Harley, was the Smokey Mountains. He and his wife Liz loved nature and they always had binoculars close at hand. He was also a longtime member of the Audubon Society. Gary was raised in Indianapolis by his mother Jean S. Jones and his late father Leeland F. Jones. He graduated from Ben Davis High School where he was a first chair trumpet player in the marching band as well as a talented swimmer. He attended Indiana State University where he met his first wife, the mother of his three children, Cheryl White Jones. Married for 25 years, they raised their family in Indianapolis and were very active in Scouting as well as school activities. They were active members of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where Gary’s parents Lee and Jean were founding members. One of the families’ most memorable pastimes was camping at Indiana State Parks. Gary is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jones of Bonita Springs FL, his mother Jean S. Jones, his sister Connie Dillman (Pete), his former wife Cheryl White Jones, his five children Deborah Jones, Douglas Jones Sr. (Kim Powell), Deanna Jones, Michele Minton, and Amy Wright, all of IN. He leaves behind nine grandchildren, Michael Jones (Ashley Pickle), Douglas Jones Jr., Danielle Hughes (Kyle Johns), Denai Jones (Dylan Howell), Miranda Wright, Daniel Wright, Eric Minton, Samantha Minton Bucci (Zach), and Nick Minton, along with five great-grandchildren, Kylee Jones, Hawk Howell, Blakelyn Wright, Aralee Minton, and Zayden Minton, two nephews Ryan Dillman (Carrie) and James Dillman (Samantha), three great-nephews Luke Dillman, Jones Dillman,p Jack Dillman and one great-niece Cora Ann Dillman.
