Howard Henry Scheidt

Howard Henry Scheidt died on September 6, 2026, at his home in Naples, Florida. He was born on June 2, 1938, at home in Schererville, Indiana, where his parents owned a grocery store and his father was a butcher. Howard had one sister, Mary (Lois), and one brother, Willard (Bill). The family lived next door to the convent of their parish St. Michael the Archangel, and they later moved to Munster, Indiana, where they had a small farm raising chickens, rabbits, and evergreen trees. After his father’s death in 1948, the family moved to Crown Point, Indiana, where Howard and Bill worked at a local dairy to help support the family. Howard graduated from Crown Point High School in 1956 and did his carpentry apprenticeship at Root Lumber. He was a proud union member of Carpenters Local 1005 for 70 years. Howard was a highly proficient finish carpenter, sought after for his attention to detail and his exceptional skills with wood. He worked for various contractors around Northwest Indiana, built several houses for loved ones – including the family home in Lowell, Indiana – and also had his own business doing home remodeling. He retired in 1998. Howard married Linda Lou Doty on October 15, 1966, at St. Mary’s Church in Crown Point. Howard and Linda lived in Lowell for 31 years, where they raised two daughters, Michelle and Melissa. The family attended St. Edward Catholic Church, where he also volunteered. They spent summer weekends in Southwest Michigan and extended time in Big Pine Key, Florida annually. After retirement, Howard and Linda lived in Cudjoe Key, Florida, and spent summers in South Haven, Michigan. Howard loved the water and enjoyed many years of boating, water skiing, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, and sailing. He built his first boat when he was 15 years old and owned many boats throughout his life. He also enjoyed camping, and the family had several RVs over the years with many adventures in state parks around Indiana and Michigan. Howard appreciated his retirement years – catching mangrove snapper and frying fish for family dinners; helping friends with household projects; growing tomatoes year-round; making new friends at McDonald’s breakfast; volunteering at the soup kitchen in Key West and at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church on Big Pine Key; and spending time with his grandchildren. He was devout in his Catholic faith and always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Howard is also remembered fondly for his classic German stubbornness, his ability to fix almost anything, and his humorous everyday sayings. Howard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Linda Lou Doty Scheidt; his daughters Michelle (Barbara Crock) and Melissa (John O’Brien); his three grandchildren Molly, Ben, and Thomas O’Brien; his godchildren Michael Hilbrich, Sally Hilbrich Croner, and Andy Scheidt. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Agnes (Doffin); sister Mary Lois (James Hilbrich); brother Willard (Patricia Hooper); mother-in-law Dorothy Doty; goddaughter Karen Scheidt Sabo; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 1:00 PM, with a reception to follow in the Rome Room. Burial of his ashes will follow in October with a prayer service at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Indiana. Please do not send flowers, as Howard did not appreciate them and the family has allergies.
