John T. McDonald

John T. McDonald 86, of Bonita Springs, FL passed away on March 19, 2023. John was born on January 7, 1937, in Washington, DC, a son of the late Albert F. and Mary D. (Regan) McDonald. John was a native Washingtonian before moving to Bonita Springs in 1997. Soon after he graduated high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served a two years term from 1955 to 1957. He then attended Northwestern University where earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. On August 20, 1960, he married the love of his life, Margaret M. Hartnett. John began his career in the computer field, first with Safeway Food stores, then Remington Rand, UNIVAC, and the Machinist Union in Washington, DC. He then branched out and opened his own business, MAC Systems in Beltsville, MD. After selling his company and one not to sit idle, John finished his career with the American College of Cardiology as their Director of Information Systems. John loved everything about being on the Chesapeake Bay. He was a boater, a Maryland crab eater, and a huge fan of a good oyster. He was an avid golfer, a great storyteller, and loved reading. He could find his way around any murder mystery, whether it be American or British written. His evenings were spent watching his “British shows” with Margaret by his side. He also enjoyed a Bushmill or two with good friends, good food, and a bit of Irish music. He was extremely funny and very quick-witted. John was a family man and a very proud man. There was nothing he wouldn’t do to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. John is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret M, McDonald of Bonita Springs, FL, and his three daughters, Maureen A. Connick (Henry) of Annapolis, MD, Eileen M. Cunius of Olney, MD, Coleen M. Thompson (Thomas) of Ft. Myers, FL and his brother, Robert A. McDonald of Laurel, MD, and 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert F. McDonald and Thomas M. McDonald. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church 28300 Beaumont Rd., Bonita Springs, FL. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Café of Life of Bonita Springs, FL.
