John William "Jack" Morgan

John W. Morgan of Naples, Florida Died, December 7, 2014 in Naples. Born in San Francisco on October 22, 1921, orphaned at age six. John, who went by Jack, spent his formative years at the Masonic Home in Covina, California. Jack spent two summers on his uncles’ tuna boats off the coast of Mexico, teaching him what he did not want to do for a living. He excelled in school academically and athletically, set the school record for the 880-yard run and in 1938 competed in the Rose Bowl against Jackie Robinson. Also a star football player, he planned to go to UCLA even though he had been admitted to Harvard College. However, after the Masonic Home threw a party to celebrate his Harvard admission, Jack realized he could not disappoint the celebrants, and went east. While a Harvard undergraduate, he picked out the most beautiful girl in his roommate’s Winchester High School yearbook, Virginia “Ginnie” Chapin, whom he met and subsequently married. Jack and Ginnie were married for over 70 years. World War II cut short his college career, prompting him to leave after his junior year and join the United States Navy. So doing preserved one year of academic eligibility to resume his Harvard football career, an option he threatened to exercise into his 90s. Jack spent more than two years ordering ordnance for the United States Navy in Washington, DC, married, and returned to Harvard to complete a graduate degree at the Business School. Graduating in 1946, he took a sales job with Procter & Gamble in Los Angeles, where he and Ginnie had two children, Stephen and Nancy. The family next moved to P&G offices in Cincinnati, Harrisburg and Philadelphia, and expanded the family to include a third child, Marshall. In 1959, the Morgans headed back to Cincinnati, where Jack managed nationwide sales field offices at P&G’s Headquarters. Among Jack’s highlights at P&G were his Presidency of the Cincinnati Downtown Council, a year as a loaned executive to Ohio Governor Rhodes to head a team charged with promoting fiscal efficiency in state agencies; as the executive in charge of the design, building and occupancy of a new corporate headquarters downtown; and patron and co-driver for the city’s longest continuous car pool --- 30 years, dedicated to the inclusion of one—but only one—loyal Democrat. Jack retired from P&G in 1986 after forty years. In 1994, Ginnie and Jack moved from Cincinnati to Bonita Springs Florida, then in 2002, to the Bentley Village retirement community in Naples. While at Bentley, Jack was the building representative for the Residents Council, and moderator of the NoName club, a Saturday morning men’s discussion group. A loving husband, father, and “Grandpa Jack”, he was variously baseball coach, Cub Scout pack leader, School Committee search chair for a new high school site, and inept, but willing golfer. He inspired a legion of family, co-workers, friends, and acquaintances with his extraordinary generosity, integrity, loyalty and steadfast friendship. In addition to his wife and three children, Jack leaves four grandchildren—Margot, Sara, Jody and Nathan, and two great-grandchildren, Clara and Finn. He is predeceased by three sisters: Mildred, Edna, and Doris.
