John Robert Smith

John Robert Smith, 82 of Naples, FL passed away Friday, July 14, 2023 at his residence. Formerly of Hunt Valley, MD he began wintering in Naples in 2001 before making it his permanent home for the past 15 years. He was born February 12, 1941 in Toledo, OH a son of the late Robert E. and Esther (Bockrath) Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1964 – 1967. John graduated from Draper High School in Schenectady, NY and Siena College in Loudonville, NY and earned his master’s degree in financial management from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. His career in I.T. started while in the Navy at NSA. After leaving the Navy, he worked at Standard Oil of Ohio, then spending 13 snowy years working in Syracuse for Carrier Corporation. He consulted for Amdahl which lead him to T. Rowe Price. John was with T. Rowe for 17 years as Vice President of Special Projects; his proudest accomplishment was heading up Y2K for T. Rowe. In retirement, John served on the board at Regency Reserve and led various projects as well as implemented a Hurricane Preparation Committee, which his procedures have been adopted by many homeowner’s associations throughout Collier County. He was one of the co-founder of bocce at the Vineyard’s Country Club where he was a member. He was a fair golfer and a good dancer, who also enjoyed traveling and reading biographies of former President’s, WWII and the Civil War. Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara (Wynne) Smith; loving daughters, Colleen (Richard) Murray of Myrtle Beach, SC and Kristin (Kevin) Powell of Arvada, CO; sister, Elaine Allen of Clifton Park, NY, brothers, Frederick J. (Wanda) Smith of Broadalbin, NY and Wayne (Carol) Smith of Waite Park, MN; and five cherished grandchildren, Grace, Cohen, Ainslie, Finley and Hudson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Sean. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 3rd at 11:00am at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 7775 Vanderbilt Beach Rd., Naples, FL 34120. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to the Guadalupe Center, 509 Hope Circle, Immokalee, FL 34142 or to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
