Jonathan Holmes

Jonathan Holmes passed away suddenly at his home on May 16, 2023 in Bonita Springs, FL. Jon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Horace Allyn Holmes Jr. and Maureen (Hughes) Holmes. He grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey with some time spent in Pulau (Pacific islands). From an early age Jon loved sports not only watching, but also playing. Jon’s mother, Maureen was from England and as a child Jon made many trips to visit her family across the pond. This may have been where his love of sports developed. He often recalled going to soccer games with his grandfather, who stood over 6' 2'" lifting Jon onto his shoulders for a better view. It is also believed that this is where Jon inherited his tall stature of 6'6". He was inducted into the Collingswood High School Hall of Fame for several sports; excelling in football, track and field and still holding the record as a Junior Olympic High Jumper. Jon then went on to attend the University of Cincinnati playing on the football team as a tight end, Go Bearcats! After his graduation he moved to Clearwater, Florida area working for CSX railways. Jon traveled the entire State of Florida, and if you traveled anywhere with him and crossed over train tracks he could tell you what trains and cargo was being transported on those tracks. His memory was fantastic and he kept sharp by challenging himself daily with computer games, cross-word puzzles, participating in country club activities, but his favorite will always be listening to Rock music and attending live concerts- Jon could recall every detail about the bands and artists in the bands. Jon was then recruited to work for Sunoco Oil Company and lived in the Poconos servicing the Northeast region of the country before eventually moving back to New Jersey to work at their corporate office in center city Philadelphia. Jon loved to travel and he was always planning and researching destinations for the next trip, the next adventure. Although he was diagnosed and battled Cancer for the past 6 years, he was in remission at the time of his passing. His best adventure started almost 8 years ago when he met and eventually married his beloved wife Virginia (Ginny). Together they traveled the world with their favorite trip being his birthday trip to the Amalfi coast in July 2022. Jon and Ginny owned condos in Bonita Springs and made frequents trips to the gulf coast of FL. They decided to retire and purchased a house there with a permanent move in 2021. He loved the west coast of Florida for the weather, more relaxed pace of life and friendly people. Many of Jon’s family, friends, and neighbors will always remember the wonderful, fun-loving and caring man that he was and will he remain in their hearts. Jon is survived by his beloved wife Virginia Holmes, his daughter Kelsey Holmes and her fiancé Kevin Davis; brothers David Holmes and wife Janice, and Christian Holmes and wife Lisa, his cousin Jamie Heisel and wife Karen and many beloved cousins in England, his mother-in-law Grace Hill, and brother-in-law Joe Hill, many nieces and nephews and twin grandsons. Family and Friends will honor Jon’s life on Saturday, June 3, 2023 with a viewing from 1-3 PM at Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 S. Tamiami Trail, Bonita Springs, FL 34134, a Funeral Service will begin at 2:30 PM. Arrangement are being handled by Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home Family Owned and Operated Since 1978.
