Lisabeth A. Comm

It is with profound sadness that her family announces the passing of Lisabeth Ann Comm, a devoted wife, educator, world traveler, and lover of the arts. Lis passed away peacefully on August 23, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and a lasting impact on all who knew her. Born on September 5, 1947, in Toronto Ohio, Lis found her calling in education. She was a distinguished English teacher at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, where she served from 1970 until her retirement in 2014 in a number of capacities: as Director of Secondary Education, Research, and Professional Development from 2011 until her retirement, as K-12 Language Arts Coordinator in Westport from 2000 to 2011 and as English Department Chair at Staples High School from 1998 to 2000, where her leadership and vision shaped the academic experience for countless students and colleagues. Over her remarkable 44-year career, Lis inspired generations of students with her passion for literature and her commitment to expanding their horizons through teaching a wide array of English courses for grades 9-12. She was particularly proud of two courses she designed: Mythology and Bible, and Women in Literature. Her innovative approach to teaching included integrating literature from diverse cultures—Native American, Asian, Black, and Latin American—into the traditional English curriculum. Lis was also instrumental in introducing feminist literary criticism to the Staples English Department, forever changing the way literature was taught and understood at the school. Her love for the arts extended beyond the classroom. After moving to Florida, Lis generously volunteered her time as a docent at the Baker Museum in Naples Florida, where she shared her passion for art and culture with visitors. Her warmth, knowledge, and enthusiasm for the arts enriched the lives of many. Lis is survived by her loving husband Frank Corbo, with whom she shared 46 wonderful years of marriage. Their love was a partnership filled with mutual respect and deep affection. Together, they traveled the world, visiting all seven continents, and creating countless memories. Lis is also survived by her sisters Julie Kireta and Clare Comm, and brother James Comm. She was predeceased by her parents Pauline E. (Newbold) and John T. Comm. A celebration of Lis's life will be held in Westport Connecticut at a time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to The Alzheimer’s Foundation. Lis's passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who loved her, but her legacy as an educator, volunteer, and devoted wife will continue to inspire and comfort those she touched. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and countless students. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, Family Owned Since 1978.
