Richard J. Nye Sr.

Richard J. Nye, Sr. 86, of Bonita Springs died February 13, 2023, at his residence. He was born February 11, 1937, in Carey, OH a son of the late Kenneth E. and Marjorie C. Nye. He had been a resident of Bonita Springs since 1998 coming from Brunswick, OH. After high school, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served 3 years during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, he began his career with Riser Foods in Bedford, OH. There he served as their plant manager, general plant manager and when he retired in 1998, he was Vice President of Eagle Ice Cream a division of Riser Foods. He was a member of the Bonita Springs Moose Lodge and a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Richard spent a lot of time away from home with the Red Cross. Due to his background in the food industry, Richard oversaw the logistics of food distribution at many natural disasters for the American Red Cross including Hurricane Katrina, Super Storm Sandy, and the Colorado Wild Fires. In June of 2016, he was awarded the Volunteer of the Year, the Carlene Sharples Commitment Award for his dedicated service. For the past 20 years, he has been employed at Bonita Fairways overseeing the cart barn and most recently as the starter. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Catherine E. Nye of Bonita Springs; two daughters, Sara E. Heil of Ft. Myers, FL and Laurie A. Oakes of Bonita Springs, FL; one son, Richard J. Nye, Jr. and his wife, Geannie Nye of Middlefield, OH; 3 grandchildren, Katie Nye, Darrien Heil, and Kayla Oakes; and 2 great-grandchildren, Poppy and Wyatt. He is also survived by his two sisters, June Nye and Janet Lucik; and three brothers, Donald Nye, Robert Nye, and Dale Nye. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edward Nye and Gaylord Nye. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home 28300 S. Tamiami Tr., Bonita Springs, FL with Rev. Dr. Bob N.
