James E. Smith

November 2, 1928 - February 16, 2022

James E. Smith, age 93, of Naples, FL passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Frances Georgeson Hospice House. Formerly of Akron, OH he had moved to Bonita Springs, FL in 1992 before relocating to Vi at Bentley Village in Naples in 2010. Jim was born and raised in Canton, OH and attended Kent State University, graduating in 1950 with a degree in journalism. He was a radio newsman in Akron from 1950-1953, moving to TV in Youngstown at WKBN-TV as a promotion and public relations manager. Mr. Smith briefly returned to Akron radio as a salesman and then moved to TV sales at WEWS in 1958. As a corporate officer, Smith was active in TV acquisitions in Kansas City, Phoenix, Tampa and Detroit and also responsible for the installation and operation of a computer system in all Scripps markets. He retired as vice president and board member of what was Scripps Howard Broadcasting and is now E.W. Scripps in 1989 after a 31 year career at WEWS, Cleveland. Survivors include his son, Douglas Smith; his daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Richard Meidlinger; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Megan and Alicia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Smith; and by his parents, Ralph and Dorothy Smith. In accordance to Jim’s wishes, no services will be held, however a celebration of life will take place at a later date.
