Joan M. Maier Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Joan Marie Maier (nee McGinley), 89, died at home on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Formerly of Jenkintown, PA, she had been a Bonita Springs resident since 2004. Joan was born on June 25, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA, the youngest child of James and Agnes (nee Slater) McGinley. Following graduation from Little Flower High School in 1950, she worked as a secretary. Joan married Henry J. Maier in 1953; they shared a lifetime of love, faith, and an unshakeable partnership. Joan and Hank approached their lives together as a team, parenting their eight children and managing the family business. She was an inquisitive, intelligent, and well-read woman, always open to new ideas and perspectives. As her children entered their teen years, Joan enrolled in college courses and quickly transitioned to full-time studies, graduating from Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, PA, on Mother’s Day 1983. In retirement, Joan delighted in hosting children and grandchildren, whether in Jenkintown, PA, Ocean City, NJ, or Southwest Florida. Joan enjoyed playing bridge, watching Jeopardy, discussing menus, recipes, current events, and quietly reading a book in her favorite chair. During her years in Bonita Springs, Joan cherished time spent with Jerry and Marie McCrea. Joan shared a strong sisterly bond with her niece, Marie. The family is grateful to Theresa and Paul for moving to Estero, FL and providing our parents with loving support these past five years. Joan will be missed for her quiet and calming presence. She showed genuine interest in every person she met. She was an intentional listener, more interested in learning about others and understanding them than in talking about herself. Joan ended each day with prayers of thanksgiving and gratitude. Her deep and abiding faith in a loving God was reflected in her gracious, loving, unassuming and attentive presence to those around her. Joan is predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Henry J. Maier; son, John H. Maier; sister, Marie (nee McGinley) Murphy and brothers, Joseph McGinley and Thomas McGinley. Joan is survived by her children: Kathleen (the late David) Struble of Roanoke, VA; Theresa Maier (Paul Giardina) of Estero, FL; Joanne (Glenn) Krumel of Boulder, CO; Barbara (Kurt) Thomas of Hanover, PA; Donna (Jim) Kalkbrenner of Davidsonville, MD; Kevin (Marian) Maier of Richboro, PA; and Eileen Maier (Ian Tavener) of Sydney, Australia; twelve cherished grandchildren – Kathryn Struble, Michael Struble, Shannon Brien, Kellan Brien, Gregory Krumel, Tom (Amy Franz-Thomas) Thomas, Patrick Thomas, Matthew Kalkbrenner, Paul Kalkbrenner, Julie Kalkbrenner, Jakob Maier, Jessica Maier. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Sister Edna Maier, SND of Windsor, CT; Sister Florence Maier, SND of Cincinnati, OH; and brother-in-law, Conrad (Mary) Maier of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples, FL. Burial will follow in the church memorial garden.
