Jean L. Achenbach

Jean L. Achenbach, formerly of Toledo Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home in Naples, Florida on February 6, surrounded by family. She is survived by her two sons, Bruce Achenbach of Naples, Florida, Brian Achenbach and his wife, Younghie, of Claremont, California; her daughter-in-law, Julie Achenbach of Naples, Florida; grandchildren, Kyler Achenbach of Naples, Florida and Kendra Warner of Grand Rapids, Michigan; her nephew Alan Achenbach and his wife, Dena, of Taylorville, Illinois. Jean’s death was preceded by her husband, Walter B. Achenbach; and son, Jay Achenbach, both in 2016. Jean was born and grew up in Taylorville, Illinois, followed by her adolescent years riding horses on her farm in Branson Missouri. Prior to WWII she became a licensed pilot flying open cockpit Piper Cubs. During WWII she served in the United States Navy as a control tower operator. After the war, she joined Piedmont Airlines as a flight attendant before marrying her husband of 70 years, Curly, as he was known to his friends. Jean and Curly and their 3 children spent 40 years in Toledo, Ohio. Many of those years Jean was active as a docent for the Toledo Art Museum. As members of Inverness Country Club, they were active golf and tennis players prior to their move to England where they lived in London and Southport until their retirement. Jean and Curly enjoyed a healthy and active retirement in Sapphire, North Carolina and Naples, Florida. They were 30-year residents of Wydnemere Country Club in Naples. After Curly’s death in 2016 she continued her active life in Naples by moving into her son’s Twin Eagles home where she was known to all in the community as the daily walker who outpaced her accompanying caregiver. She enjoyed bridge club, book club, and the Naples Philharmonic. Per her wishes, there will be a small service limited to family. The service will be held in Taylorville, Illinois where her ashes will be placed in the family plot. This service will celebrate Jean’s wonderful and genuinely happy life of almost 98 years.
