Patricia J. Mostyn Aker

Patricia Joan Mostyn Aker “Pat” passed away August 3, 2021 in Fort Myers, FL. Pat was born September 24, 1940 in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York to the late William Francis Mostyn and Marie “Rita” Beaudry Mostyn. Pat graduated from Dominican Academy High School in New York City. Attended Molloy College in Rockville Centre and graduated from D’Youville College in Buffalo New York with a BS in Nursing. She later graduated from New York University with an MA in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. She received post graduate education at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka in Psychiatric Assessment and Advanced Psychotherapy. Pat’s nursing career spanned 38 years, and included experience as a clinician, educator, administrator and consultant. Some memorable experiences included: assisting with the establishment of the first Pediatric ICU at New York Cornell Hospital, part of the team who provided psychiatric services using bidirectional TV between a pediatric clinic in East Harlem and Mt Sinai Medical Center in NYC (1973-75). Most rewarding experiences included: as Director of Nursing, working with a dedicated, competent staff, changed the delivery of care at Western Missouri Mental Health Center, from often not meeting minimal standards to a leader in psychiatric care in Missouri. Also, as a consultant, provided staff with the tools to change Dementia care from locked units to home like care units. Since retiring, Pat and John have travelled extensively, Including, Canada, Central America, Caracas and Cartagena, Mexico, Caribbean Islands, Great Britain, France, Italy many times, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Africa, China, Tibet, Dubai, India Sri Lanka, as well as many memorable trips throughout the USA. When not traveling, Pat found a number of volunteer jobs along the way, including: CASA, Pet therapy with Wizard, tutor with Super Kids Club, catechist for older kids preparing for First Communion and as a Eucharistic minister, bringing Communion to the home bound. She is survived by her loving husband John Lewis Aker and his 3 children, Wynn (Teresa) Aker, Jeffrey Aker, Rebecca Aker, 6 grandchildren, Chanda Kelly, Jocelyn (Chris) Leiske, Krystle (Shane) Hill, Eric (S.L.) Aker, Rachel Shriver, and Rick (Kristin) Shriver and 7 great grandchildren, Savannah and Andrew Frenking, Kale, Riley, Karson, Raelynn Shriver and Ethan Leskie. Also survived by her brother Martin (Susan) Mostyn his 3 children Martin (Beth) Mostyn, Dennis (Heather) Mostyn and Thomas (Molly) Mostyn and 7 grandchildren. Her deceased sister’s children, Christine Mackay, Francis (Karen) Kelly, Laurene (Antonio) Torroni and Jacqueline (Michael) Denis, all their 9 children and 1 great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Jacqueline Mostyn Kelly and Patricia Jean Mostyn A visitation will be held at Our Lady of Light Catholic Community from 11AM to 12 Noon, Tuesday August 10, 2021, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 Noon.
