Reed K. Jarvi

Reed Jarvi, USNR (ret.), passed away quietly on December 21, 2015 at AVOW Hospice of Naples. Reed hailed from Ashtabula Ohio, and was the eldest son of Jane and Hubert. He attended Harbor High and was awarded an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in spring of 1972, joining the Class of 1976 on July 1st of that summer. While at the Naval Academy, Reed was in the 28th Company, majored in Mechanical Engineering and played club rugby. Upon commissioning in June 1976, he selected flight training and received his wings of gold as a Naval Flight Officer. Following training in VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Reed reported to VP-56. While in Jacksonville, Reed met Darlene Chury and they married on April 3, 1982. Following the completion of his active duty commitment, Reed left the regular Navy, eventually affiliating with the Naval Air Reserves at NAS Jacksonville where he retired with the rank of Commander on October 1, 1998 Reed and Darlene relocated to Naples FL in 1989, where they settled down to a life of work, play and building a large network of friends. Reed went into a successful career as a civil engineer with Agnoli, Barber and Brundage while Darlene continued her passion for teaching. He went on to work as a consultant and vice-president for Vanesse Daylor in Ft. Myers. He ended his career at Collier County as a Transportation Planning Manager. Reed continued to play club rugby, traveling internationally, and over time became a rugby coach with the men’s Naples Hammerheads, Naples Lady Hammerhead Rugby Club and Naples Bears High School Rugby Club. Reed’s reputation was as someone who cared far more for others than for himself. He will be sorely missed, but the biggest thing everyone will miss is his smile and grin. He was a great man, mentor and friend to all. Reed was a magnet for people and brought the best out in everyone. Reed is survived by his wife of 33 years, Darlene. He is predeceased by his Father, Mother and a brother, Jay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made AVOW Hospice of Naples who took such good care of him, the Naples High School “Bears” and/or Naples Men’s Hammerheads” Rugby Clubs and the Naval Academy Rugby Athletic Association. Service to be held at a later date in January. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home.
