Richard "Dick" Bagosy

Richard "Dick" Vincent Bagosy, age 85, passed away on September 2, 2026. He was born on August 14, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, to Mary (Wilk) Bagosy and Harvey John Bagosy. Dick grew up in the Delray neighborhood of southwest Detroit. As a young boy, he worked as a paperboy and, throughout his life, enjoyed sharing the many wonderful stories and memories he collected along his route. His independence and lifelong love of Detroit sports began at an early age. Before he was even a teenager, Dick would take the bus by himself to attend Detroit Tigers games. He attended Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit, where he met the love of his life, Mary Jo. He established many lifelong friendships there as well. They both graduated in 1959 and went on to share 61 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, faith, family, and countless treasured memories. Mary Jo passed away in 2025, and Dick missed her deeply. The education and spiritual foundation he received at Holy Redeemer helped instill in him a strong faith and a deep compassion for others—qualities that remained with him throughout his life. In 1961, Dick proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He served for two years aboard the USS Newport News, whose call sign was “Thunder,” as a Control Room Man. During his service, Dick traveled extensively throughout Europe and formed friendships with many good men. The USS Newport News also served as a flagship during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Dick remained immensely proud of his service to his country and of the experiences and friendships he gained during his time in the Navy. Dick and Mary Jo spent much of their lives in and around the Detroit area, including Troy and Rochester Hills, Michigan. For the final 12 years of their lives together, they made their home in Estero, Florida. Dick was an avid sports fan who faithfully followed the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Pistons. He also enjoyed both University of Michigan and Michigan State football and basketball. Whether his favorite team was winning or losing, Dick’s loyalty to Detroit and Michigan sports never wavered. He also loved visiting the casino and trying his luck at the slot machines. Card games brought him great enjoyment throughout his life—from Euchre nights with his late father-in-law, Terry Donnelly, to poker games and spirited games of Uno with his grandchildren. Dick truly relished good food. Among his favorites were Coney Island hot dogs, especially those from Lafayette Coney Island in downtown Detroit. He also loved the deli food from Embers Deli in Rochester, where all three of his children worked during the 1980s. Corned beef and matzo ball soup were particular favorites. Above all else, Dick was devoted to his family. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Jo Bagosy and a loving father to his three children: his oldest son, Richard “Rick” Bagosy, and Rick’s wife, Pamela; his daughter, Beth Sandman; and his youngest son, Christopher Bagosy, and Christopher’s wife, Kerri. Dick was a proud and loving grandfather to six grandchildren: Erin Bagosy; Kate Bagosy and her husband, Lucas; Evan and Lauren Sandman; and Brendan and Christian Bagosy. He was also blessed to become a great-grandfather to Lauren’s daughter, Grace. Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Jo; his parents, Mary and Harvey Bagosy; and his sister, Mary Ann. Dick leaves behind a beautiful legacy built over a lifetime of love, faith, service, family, and cherished traditions. He will be remembered for the stories he shared, his pride in his Navy service, his unwavering devotion to Detroit sports, his enjoyment of good food and friendly competition, and, most importantly, the love he had for his family. Although his absence leaves an immeasurable space in the hearts of those who loved him, his family finds comfort in knowing that Dick and Mary Jo are together once again. His stories, traditions, humor, and love will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and all those fortunate enough to have known him. Richard "Dick" Vincent Bagosy will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. May he rest in eternal peace. A private ceremony with immediate family to honor the life of Richard will be held in the near future.
